A Crucial Decision for US Foreign Policy

The United States Senate has passed a resolution that restricts President Donald Trump from undertaking additional military actions against Venezuela without the authorization of Congress. The vote resulted in a narrow 52-47 majority in favor of the measure, which will now head to the House of Representatives.

This decision comes just days after American forces conducted a dramatic military raid in Caracas, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Senators are preparing to vote on the latest in a series of measures regarding war powers, introduced after the administration ramped up military pressure on Venezuela by targeting boats off its coast in September.

Although Republicans have blocked all previous measures, the last vote was close, with a tally of 49-51, as two senators from Trump’s party joined Democrats in supporting a resolution in November. Administration officials have informed voters that there is no intention to change the government or carry out attacks on Venezuelan territory.
