Ken Ofori-Atta Arrested in the United States Amid Corruption Charges
Ken Ofori-Atta, Accused of Corruption, Detained in the US
Former Ghanaian Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been arrested in the United States after fleeing his home country last year for medical treatment, according to his lawyers. Ofori-Atta is currently wanted in Ghana on corruption charges, and extradition proceedings have already been initiated by Ghanaian authorities. His legal team contests these allegations, claiming they are politically motivated.
His detention was confirmed on Wednesday, with his legal representatives stating they anticipate a "swift" resolution to the matter. They added that their client adheres to legal protocols and is in the process of changing his immigration status to remain in the U.S. "beyond the validity of his visa."
Ofori-Atta faces numerous charges related to his tenure as finance minister, including conspiracy to commit fraud and causing financial losses to the state. Last February, Ghana’s financial authorities declared him a fugitive, suspecting he was attempting to evade investigations. This status was retracted once his legal team confirmed his intention to return.
He served as finance minister from January 2017 until February 2024, during which time the New Patriotic Party was in power. Following the party's defeat in the December 2024 elections, John Mahama of the National Democratic Party assumed the presidency, pledging a crackdown on corruption. While relations between Ghana and the U.S. are strong, Ghana condemned U.S. actions in Venezuela, characterizing them as an "invasion."
