Cases of Cancer Have Dramatically Increased

There has been a worldwide explosion of cancer cases, and the world is not prepared. Since 1990, the number of cancer cases has doubled, reaching 18.5 million new diagnoses in 2023. Deaths have also risen, surpassing 10 million per year, with the most significant increases observed in low and middle-income countries. Without urgent action, experts estimate that the annual number of cancer cases will exceed 30 million by 2050. Alarmingly, approximately four out of ten cancer-related deaths are linked to preventable risks such as smoking, poor diet, and high blood sugar.

Modifiable Risk Factors Contribute to Millions of Deaths

Over 40% of cancer-related deaths globally are associated with 44 modifiable risk factors, including tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and obesity, particularly in resource-limited countries. Emission studies have indicated that a significant number of deaths could be avoided through proven public health measures. Projections indicate that global cancer cases will increase by 61% over the next 25 years.

The Need for Global Action

Researchers emphasize that responding to this growing cancer burden will require stronger actions from governments and policymakers. This includes expanding prevention efforts, improving early diagnosis, and ensuring better access to effective treatments. It is essential for cancer prevention to become a priority in health policies in low and middle-income countries to ensure safe and accessible treatments for all patients.
