US Plans Action to Seize Russian Oil Tanker

According to recent reports, the United States of America may take action to intercept and seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker navigating the Atlantic on its way to Europe. Two American officials stated that US forces intend to stop the vessel, which has previously transported oil from Venezuela and is currently located between Scotland and Iceland.

President Donald Trump declared last month that he had ordered a "blockade" of sanctioned tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, a measure that the Venezuelan government described as "theft." Prior to actions against the former leader of the country, Nicolás Maduro, Trump repeatedly accused the Venezuelan government of using ships to bring drugs to American shores.

The US Coast Guard attempted to board the tanker Bella 1 last month in the Caribbean, believing it was heading to Venezuela. They obtained a warrant to seize the vessel, accused of violating US sanctions and transporting Iranian oil. Russian ships are currently under careful observation by Russia.

The distance and weather conditions complicate any potential boarding operation; however, American officials prefer seizing the vessel rather than sinking it. This tense situation coincides with the arrival of approximately 10 American military transport aircraft in the United Kingdom, raising questions about possible military actions by the US.

The British Ministry of Defence declined to comment on the military activities of other nations. Maritime risk expert Dimitris Ampatzidis noted that the renaming and changing of the ship's flag will not alter the nature of American actions, which are motivated by the true identity of the vessel, ownership networks, and the history of sanctions.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that it is closely monitoring the situation surrounding the oil tanker and called on Western countries to respect the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters.
