Manchester United in Search of a New Manager

Manchester United is poised to find a new manager after the Premier League club dismissed Ruben Amorim on Monday. The European giants have gone through 10 managers—including permanent, interim, and caretaker—in the 12 years since the retirement of their legendary coach, Sir Alex Ferguson, at the end of the 2012-2013 season.

Amorim, who was thought to be a long-term appointment, managed to stay only 14 months and left the club following a press conference where he criticized the scouting department and sporting director, urging them to "do their job." In announcing his departure, the club's statement said it was "the right time for a change," given the team was sitting sixth in the Premier League. Darren Fletcher, a former player for the club and current academy coach, will take charge of the team for the next two matches.

Who are the Favorites to Take Over?

The club with the most trophies in the Premier League has not provided any hints regarding the appointment of a new manager; however, fans, experts, and the British media have begun proposing a few names. These include former players, current Premier League managers, dismissed managers, and England national team coaches.

Oliver Glasner: The current manager of Crystal Palace, who led the team to its first FA Cup title in 2025, is one of the frontrunners for the position, especially as he is likely to leave Palace this season.

Darren Fletcher: The former United midfielder, who played for 12 years under Ferguson, is a favorite after being appointed as interim manager. Fletcher, who has been United's academy coach since July, could follow the path of former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who secured the main coaching position after a stint as interim.

Enzo Maresca: Although his departure from Chelsea mirrored Amorim’s exit from United, the Italian had a successful season in London, winning both the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: The former player and manager of United is favored by fans who believe his experience could bring back the club's glory. While he did not win major trophies, he led the team to a Europa League final.

Thomas Tuchel: The current England national team coach is focused on the World Cup but his name has been floated for the United position ahead of the new season beginning in August 2026.
