Crucial Meeting for the Future of Ukraine

Key allies of Ukraine are gathering in Paris to discuss security guarantees for Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. This meeting comes as national leaders and diplomats work towards ending the nearly four-year war through a peace plan facilitated by the United States. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is accompanied by representatives from 35 countries, including 27 heads of state.

Senior negotiators from the United States, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are also present as part of broader efforts to develop a unified Ukrainian, European, and American stance to be presented to Russia. The administration of President Donald Trump has faced criticism for allegedly capitulating to the Kremlin's narrative and the maximalist demands of President Vladimir Putin to end the war.

The gathering of Ukrainian allies, dubbed the "coalition of the willing," represents the latest in a series of planned meetings for the new year as diplomatic efforts to conclude the conflict have accelerated in recent weeks. French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed optimism regarding this meeting, emphasizing the importance of ensuring security guarantees for Ukraine as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression should a ceasefire be achieved.

However, prospects for progress remain uncertain, as the Trump administration's attention has shifted towards Venezuela following the American forces' kidnapping of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife on Saturday. Additionally, there are few signs that Russia is willing to accept the current proposals on the table. The issue of territory remains a significant obstacle to negotiations, and fighting between the two sides shows no signs of diminishing.

Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine, demanding complete control over the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine as part of any agreement. Donbas consists of two regions; Moscow controls the entire Luhansk region, but Kyiv still holds a significant portion of the Donetsk region, where fighting continues unabated. Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that ceding territory would encourage Moscow and has stated that he will not sign a peace agreement that does not deter Russia from invading again. Furthermore, the cession of Ukrainian land is prohibited by the national constitution.
