Gang Rape Victim from Haryana Discharged from Hospital

A victim of gang rape in Haryana, India, has returned home after a week of hospitalization, according to a police official. The 26-year-old woman, a mother of two, was admitted to a hospital in Faridabad on December 30, suffering from serious injuries to her head and face, along with multiple fractures.

According to her sister, the woman was heading to a friend’s house and was waiting for transport after midnight when two men in an ambulance offered her a ride. They took her to an isolated location, where they sexually assaulted her before throwing her from the speeding vehicle. A police spokesperson stated that authorities reacted swiftly, arresting the two men and confiscating the vehicle.

On January 2, the woman was discharged from the hospital after treatment and surgeries. Senior police officer Mukesh Kumar announced that permission had been sought from the court for the victim to attend a "identification parade," during which she would identify the two suspects. The incident occurred between 12:30 AM and 2:00 AM on the night of December 29-30, according to the spokesperson’s statements.

This case has sparked outrage and anger across India, reminiscent of the 2012 gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a bus in Delhi. Despite authorities intensifying measures against rape, tens of thousands of cases continue to be reported annually, with 29,670 rapes and 2,796 attempted rapes recorded in 2023 alone.
