Researchers from Peking University Health Science Center and Harbin Veterinary Research Institute have identified "migrions," viral structures that turn infected cells into delivery vehicles for infection.

An Innovative Mode of Transmission

A study published in "Science Bulletin" shows that cells infected with the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) pack viral material into large structures called migrasomes, formed when cells move. These structures enable viruses to be delivered simultaneously to new cells, thus accelerating the viral replication process.

Impact on Disease Severity

Experiments conducted on mice demonstrated that migrion-mediated infection led to significantly more severe symptoms compared to free viruses. This transmission method has been associated with serious infections of the lungs and brain, often fatal, highlighting the heightened pathogenic potential of this strategy.
