Bitcoin Core Development Grows in 2025 with More Developers and Code Ecosystem
Surge in Development Activity in 2025
Bitcoin developers have returned to work in a pivotal year for cryptocurrencies. According to metrics tracking the evolution of Bitcoin Core, 2025 has been a promising year for the blockchain, with more developers contributing greater volumes of code, states Jameson Lopp, co-founder of the crypto management platform Casa.
In the past 12 months, 135 unique individuals have contributed code to Bitcoin Core, marking an increase from just over 100 in 2024, continuing the upward trend. The number of contributions peaked in 2018 when nearly 200 developers were involved. Additionally, these developers modified more code, reporting 285,000 lines of code changed last year, an increase of over 3% from the 276,000 lines in 2024.
This development activity coincided with a significant year for Bitcoin (BTC), which continued to set new price records, exceeding $126,000 in October, fueled by increased interest from major financial institutions under Trump’s cryptocurrency-friendly administration.
Jameson Lopp also noted that code contributions for Bitcoin Core increased by 1% over the year, reaching 2,541, maintaining the upward trajectory since 2023, following a decline from a peak of nearly 3,500 in 2021. Moreover, the volume of emails on the Bitcoin development mailing list surged by 60% year-over-year in 2025.
However, these results are still far from the historical peak of approximately 5,000 messages in 2015. Debates on the limits of data OP_RETURN have led to an increase in October, allowing a greater volume of non-financial data to be incorporated into Bitcoin transactions. Bitcoin Core also passed third-party security audits for the first time in November, with security firm Quarkslab stating that the software supporting the blockchain was "mature and well-tested" with no high or medium severity vulnerabilities.
