Position of the Danish Prime Minister

Denmark's Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has urged American President Donald Trump to stop the threats regarding the takeover of Greenland. This request comes after Trump reiterated his desire to acquire the territory following a U.S. action against Venezuela's leader. "It makes no sense to discuss the need for the U.S. to take Greenland. The U.S. has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Kingdom of Denmark," stated Frederiksen in a press release.

Context of the Statements

The comments came after an interview published by The Atlantic, in which Trump asserted, "We need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense." Over the weekend, the United States bombed Venezuela and removed President Nicolas Maduro, raising concerns in Denmark that a similar action could be taken against Greenland, a Danish territory.

International Reactions

Frederiksen added: "Therefore, I firmly urge the U.S. to stop the threats against a historic ally and against another nation that has made it very clear it is not for sale." The Greenlandic Prime Minister's office did not immediately comment on Trump’s statements. The American President has repeatedly stated that Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory and NATO member, should become part of the U.S.

Denmark's Involvement

This comes after the Trump administration appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, an advocate for annexation, as a special envoy for this mineral-rich island. Greenland's strategic position, located between Europe and North America, makes it a crucial site for the U.S. ballistic missile defense system, and its mineral wealth is appealing in light of America's desire to reduce dependence on Chinese exports.

Social Media Reactions

Katie Miller, wife of Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff, posted a controversial image of the Danish autonomous territory in the colors of the American flag, accompanied by a single word: "SOON." Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the Prime Minister of Greenland, called the post "disrespectful," stating that relations between nations should be based on mutual respect and international law, not on symbolic gestures that ignore their status and rights. Denmark has requested full respect for the territorial integrity of the country following this situation.
