By mimicking small structural features found in DNA and proteins, researchers have developed plastics that are durable yet can be triggered to decompose naturally. The rate of degradation can be precisely adjusted, ranging from days to years, or activated via light or simple chemical signals. This breakthrough could revolutionize everything from food packaging to drug delivery systems.

Instead of requiring extreme heat or harsh chemicals, this type of chemistry allows materials to degrade on command. For instance, food packaging could disintegrate after a day, while auto components may need to last for many years.

By controlling the spatial arrangement of adjacent chemical groups, researchers can program the degradation rate of the polymer, allowing it to adapt to its actual uses.
