Ahmed al-Ahmed Honored at Cricket Match After Bondi Attack
Heroes Recognized Following Bondi Beach Attack
Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who confronted and disarmed one of the attackers at Bondi Beach, was honored alongside other first responders during a cricket match prior to the fifth Test of the Ashes series, held on January 4, 2026, at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Both the England and Australia cricket teams, as well as the attending public, acknowledged the sacrifices of emergency personnel and citizens who intervened during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in December. The two teams formed a tribute on the field, and spectators applauded enthusiastically.
The loudest applause was reserved for hero Ahmed al-Ahmed, who ran toward one of the attackers and managed to seize the weapon, despite having a sling on his right arm. This 43-year-old fruit shop owner was filmed during the incident and received acclaim as a hero, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commending his actions as a representation of “Australian unity.”
Al-Ahmed, a Muslim Australian of Syrian descent, moved to Australia in 2006. He was having lunch nearby when the attack occurred and promptly intervened. Authorities described the incident as an anti-Jewish terrorist attack, taking place during a gathering for a Hanukkah celebration, where two men, a father and son, opened fire, killing 15 people and injuring an additional 42.
Cricket Australia’s CEO Todd Greenberg termed the attack a “tragically devastating” event and emphasized the courage of first responders and the community as a testament to the spirit of national solidarity. Security measures were heightened for the cricket test, with uniformed and mounted police ensuring public order in the area.
