Military Intervention and the Capture of Maduro

The recent conflict in Venezuela has escalated with the capture of President Nicolás Maduro by American forces, an act that raises significant controversies and risks. It is evident that the United States aims to eliminate leaders they deem adversarial; however, direct military interventions are rare due to the associated risks.

Caracas, the capital, has been shaken by explosions, and the Venezuelan government now faces the reality of an open foreign intervention, particularly after Trump's announcement of Maduro's capture, who will now be tried in the U.S. for serious charges related to arms and drug trafficking.

This type of military intervention has not been seen in Latin America since 1989 when the U.S. invaded Panama to depose Manuel Noriega. Similarly, Washington argues that this is part of a broader campaign against crime and drug trafficking.

Moreover, Maduro's government has been accused of human rights abuses, with the UN reporting severe violations, including extrajudicial killings and torture. Over 100 political prisoners have been documented in Venezuela, highlighting internal tensions and the decline of humanitarian conditions.

However, many are questioning what the next steps for Venezuela will be. While the U.S. prefers that the opposition take power, the complex reality—such as the government's control over the judiciary and military—hinders a quick and easy transition.

The American intervention is also viewed with skepticism by some Venezuelans, who fear it could lead to violent fragmentation and a prolonged power struggle. Even within the opposition, not all support collaboration with the U.S., given the controversial history of interventions in Latin America.

Thus, the future of Venezuela remains uncertain. Will new elections be organized? Or will there be attempts to remove other government officials? These questions remain unanswered, and Venezuela's political future appears more fragile than ever.
