Tesla Loses Position as Global Leader in Electric Vehicle Sales

Tesla has surrendered its title of the largest global seller of electric vehicles to the Chinese company BYD. This shift comes after a year marked by controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk's political maneuvers and the expiration of tax benefits in the United States for buyers.

Furthermore, Tesla announced it sold 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, compared to BYD's 2.26 million, representing a 9% decline from the previous year.

Over the years, Tesla, founded in 2003, held a significant lead over traditional automakers in the development and sale of electric vehicles. However, competition in the Chinese market has intensified, accelerating the growth of this segment.

Musk's support for former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2024 and the formation of a 'government efficiency' committee (DOGE), which led to massive layoffs in the public sector, generated negative reactions and protests at Tesla facilities. Fourth-quarter sales totaled 418,227, failing to meet the lowered target of 440,000 set by analysts.

The negative impact of the expiration of the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicle purchases, removed by the Trump administration, further affected sales. Nonetheless, investors remain optimistic about Musk's ambitious plans to transform Tesla into a leader in autonomous taxi services and the development of humanoid robots for households.

This optimism has led to an approximately 11% increase in Tesla's stock in 2025. The company recently launched two more affordable electric vehicle models, the Model Y and Model 3, aimed at competing with cheaper Chinese models in Europe and Asia. Musk begins 2026 as the world's richest person, with prospects of an initial public offering for his rocket company, SpaceX.

In November, Tesla's directors granted Musk a historic compensation package of nearly $1 trillion, contingent upon meeting performance targets. However, Tesla faces the risk of temporarily losing its car sales license in California after a judge ruled that it misled customers regarding the safety of its autonomous taxis.
