New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Revokes Pro-Israel Decrees

Palestinian rights advocates are applauding New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for repealing municipal decrees in favor of Israel, just hours after his inauguration, an action that has been swiftly condemned by the Israeli government. On his first day in office, Mamdani rescinded all executive orders issued by his predecessor, Eric Adams, following allegations of corruption against Adams from September 26, 2024.

One of the revoked orders had restricted boycotts against Israel and prohibited city employees from issuing contracts that "discriminate against the State of Israel, Israeli citizens, or those associated" with this U.S. ally. Signed by Adams less than a month prior, it was viewed by critics as an attempt to ignite controversy for Mamdani's new administration.

Another rescinded directive adopted a controversial definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), which advocates argue can be used to censor and punish critical speech against Israel. Nasreen Issa, a member of the Palestine Youth Movement – NYC, stated that Israel and its supporters have long promoted the "criminalization of dissent." "Therefore, Mamdani's rejection is a positive step towards protecting the rights of New Yorkers and the dignity of Palestinians," Issa told Al Jazeera.

Afaf Nasher, leader of CAIR New York, also praised Mamdani's decision to overturn a "unconstitutional decree that restricted New Yorkers' ability to critique the racism of the Israeli government or boycott human rights abuses in Israel."

"This attack on freedom of expression, favoring Israel, should never have been issued in the first place," Nasher said. She criticized the IHRA definition, asserting that the guidelines are "too broad" in labeling disagreement with Zionism as antisemitism.

The Israeli government has condemned Mamdani's actions, asserting that he reveals his "true face." "This is not leadership. It's antisemitic fuel on an open fire," the Israeli foreign ministry stated on social media.

Chikli Amichai, the minister of diaspora affairs, used Islamophobic language to criticize Mamdani's decision, labeling him a "Hamas sympathizer." The intense Israeli response is not solely about the mayor's policies but also about the control of the narrative, according to Issa.

The 34-year-old Mamdani was sworn in using a copy of the Quran, making him the first Muslim mayor of the largest city in America. During his inauguration ceremony, he vowed to continue combating antisemitism and to celebrate the Jewish community in New York.

Mamdani's rise has been swift, with supporters claiming that his vocal support for Palestinian rights has contributed to his electoral success amid growing anger towards Israel.
