U.S. Authorities Announce Arrest of Mint Hill Youth

Federal authorities in the United States have charged an 18-year-old with plotting a "potential terror attack" on New Year’s Eve in the suburban town of Mint Hill, North Carolina. On Friday, officials from the North Carolina Prosecutor's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) identified the suspect as Christian Sturdivant, an American citizen from Mint Hill. The intended targets of Sturdivant’s alleged plans were a grocery store and a nearby fast-food restaurant.

“Countless lives were saved here,” stated U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson at a press conference. “On New Year’s Eve, everyone is at the grocery store. We buy what we need to celebrate. We could have faced significant loss of life, serious injuries here.”

Ferguson explained that Sturdivant was arrested on New Year’s Eve, the very day he planned to execute the attack. The young man has been charged with “attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization” and made his first court appearance on Friday. According to Ferguson, Sturdivant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

During the press conference, Ferguson expressed frustrations with the judicial system for previously rejecting a request to hold Sturdivant on mental health grounds. “I think it’s relevant that as part of their efforts, the FBI brought Mr. Sturdivant before a magistrate judge to try to have him involuntarily admitted,” Ferguson said. “And that’s because he threatened not only the lives of others but stated that he planned to die by shooting a police officer.”

The arrest was part of a years-long investigation into Sturdivant's behavior, which officials described as that of a "prolific user of social media." To date, the prosecutor stated that the young man attempted to contact the armed group ISIS through online platforms and was receiving instructions from them.

An FBI raid at his home uncovered hammers and knives hidden under his bed, as well as notes detailing attack plans. “The FBI conducted around-the-clock surveillance on this subject, including during the Christmas nights,” stated Barnacle.

Sturdivant's arrest comes a year after a similar terrorist attack in New Orleans, where a driver killed 14 individuals. FBI Director Kash Patel praised the arrest, reaffirming the agency's commitment to saving lives.
