Jailbreaks Enable New Potential for Amazon Echo Show Devices
Jailbreaking Amazon Echo Show
While Amazon Echo Show devices are heavily restricted, they are still based on Android and can be repurposed relatively easily, especially if what you want is another Android device. Recently, a jailbreak has been accomplished for the first-generation Echo Show 8, a device from 2019, with the process demonstrated in a video by a known user. Currently, only two devices benefit from this jailbreak, the other being the Echo Show 5. If there is sufficient interest, there are no technical reasons preventing support from expanding to other devices.
One of the main reasons for performing the jailbreak is to install LineageOS on Echo devices, especially as these devices have recently begun displaying ads, without any option to disable them. The jailbreak process and installation of the LineageOS ROM is quite lengthy and includes moments where errors may arise. However, it is relatively straightforward as long as the steps are followed, and subsequently, users have the option to install the Google app package if desired. It is important to keep in mind that the Echo Show 8 comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage.
In the case of the user who accomplished the jailbreak, they largely replicated the home automation and entertainment features offered by Amazon's FireOS, using much less restrictive alternatives like Home Assistant.
