Anthony Joshua's Driver Charged After Fatal Accident in Nigeria
Tragic Accident in Nigeria
Anthony Joshua's driver has been charged following an accident in Nigeria that resulted in injuries to the boxer and the deaths of two members of his team, authorities have stated. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday. Police sources indicated that the charges include causing death by dangerous driving.
Joshua's personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami, passed away on Monday after the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a parked truck on a highway in Ogun State, near Lagos. The former heavyweight champion was taken to the hospital with injuries and was discharged on Wednesday.
Prosecutors have brought four charges against Kayode – including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid driver’s license, a police source specified. The trial has been adjourned until January 20.
Joshua, 36, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a parked truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan highway on Monday. Ghami and Ayodele were pronounced dead at the scene, while Joshua was seen being assisted from the wreckage of the vehicle. Authorities in Ogun and Lagos stated in a release that the British boxer was "overwhelmed with sadness" due to the deaths of the two men, who were close friends of his.
After his discharge, Joshua visited the funerals where their bodies were being prepared for repatriation. On Monday, Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter for over a decade, paid tribute to the team members. "Rest in peace, Latz and Sina. Your energy and loyalty, among many other wonderful qualities, will be deeply missed. I pray for strength and guidance for all their family members, friends, and, of course, AJ during these very difficult times."
