New Approach to Treating ADHD

A recent genetic study suggests that improved focus may stem from calming the brain rather than stimulating it. Researchers at Rockefeller University have discovered that reducing the level of a specific version of the Homer1 gene enhances concentration in mice by quieting neural noise.

The study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that genes significantly impact attention, demonstrating that mice with lower levels of Homer1 in the prefrontal cortex exhibited calmer brain activity and performed better on attention-demanding tasks.

The findings could open new avenues for ADHD treatments, shifting the focus towards reducing mental disarray instead of stimulating brain activity.

Priya Rajasethupathy, the leader of the research team, stated that "the gene we discovered has a remarkable effect on attention and is relevant to humans." This suggests that, instead of intensifying signals in brain circuits, therapies could target calming neuronal activity.
