Russians Suffer Huge Losses in Ukraine War

Russia concluded the year 2025 with what Ukraine described as an intelligence operation aimed at avoiding peace talks and continuing the conflict, despite devastating losses for minimal territorial gains. On December 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin at his residence near Lake Valdai.

"The regime in Kyiv launched a terrorist attack using 91 combat drones on the presidential residence in the Novgorod region. All the drones were destroyed by the air defense systems of the Russian Armed Forces," Lavrov stated. He did not specify whether Putin was at the residence at the time. However, his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha, quickly dismissed the allegations, stating that "almost a day has passed, and Russia has not provided credible evidence for its claims."

Russia presented photographs of drone debris in the snow, but the location and manufacturer of the drones could not be confirmed. Information suggests that the attack on Putin's residence is likely a fabrication by the Kremlin. Analysts also noted that recent documented Ukrainian attacks have been well reported, in contrast to the Russian accusations in this case.

On December 31, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy concluded fruitful discussions with American President Donald Trump, leading to a promise of U.S. forces' involvement in Ukraine's security following a potential peace agreement with Russia. Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, stated that "peace is on the horizon." However, Lavrov's statements cast a shadow over this optimism, asserting that "Russia's negotiating position will be revised."

Zelenskyy accused Russia of "seeking a pretext to escalate hostilities" following his meeting with Trump, emphasizing that Russia continues to refuse to cede occupied territories. By the end of 2025, Russian forces had not managed to take control of the cities of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad in Donetsk and had only occupied 55% of Hulyaipole, despite claims that they had captured the entire city.

The war has resulted in significant losses, with over 1.2 million Russians killed or injured, while Ukraine intercepted 86% of the drones and 30 of the missiles launched against its cities. This underscores the brutal escalation and complexity of this ongoing conflict.
