Identification of Victims Proves Painful for Swiss Authorities

Following a devastating fire that erupted during New Year's celebrations, Swiss authorities are racing to identify the victims and ascertain the causes of the tragedy that occurred in the town of Crans-Montana. Approximately 40 individuals have been confirmed dead, while 115 others have sustained injuries, many of them serious.

Families and friends of the victims are desperately seeking to locate their loved ones, circulating photographs on social media. "We tried to contact them; some of their locations still appear here," said Valais, a teenager who was present at the party. "I posted many images on Instagram, Facebook, any social network possible to find them," added Eleonore, another attendee.

Authorities have initiated the difficult process of identifying the victims, but due to the condition of many bodies, police have cautioned that this process could take days or even weeks. "The initial goal is to assign names to all the bodies," stated Crans-Montana Mayor Nicolas Feraud.

Many witnesses described scenes of panic as people attempted to break through barriers to escape the flames. The exact number of individuals inside the bar at the time of the fire remains unclear, with police lacking information about the number of those missing. According to Crans-Montana’s website, the bar Le Constellation had a capacity of 300 people.

More than 30 victims were transported to specialized burn units in Zurich and Lausanne, while six were taken to Geneva. Although Swiss officials confirmed that approximately 40 people died, sources from Italy have estimated that the number of fatalities may reach 47, prompting Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to plan a visit to Crans-Montana.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin referred to the fire as "a disaster of unprecedented proportions" and announced that flags would be flown at half-mast for five days. The fire broke out around 1:30 AM.

Authorities have refrained from speculating on the causes of the tragedy, stating only that it was not an attack. The chief prosecutor of the canton, Beatrice Pilloud, mentioned that investigations will also focus on the bar's compliance with safety standards.
