BYD Set to Surpass Tesla as World's Largest EV Seller
BYD Prepared to Overtake Tesla in EV Sales
The Chinese company BYD is poised to surpass Tesla in annual electric vehicle (EV) sales for the first time. According to recent reports, BYD's battery-powered electric car sales rose by nearly 28% in the previous year, exceeding 2.25 million units. In comparison, Tesla sold approximately 1.65 million vehicles during the same period, reflecting an increasingly fierce competition between the two companies.
2025 has been a challenging year for Tesla, with a mixed reception for new offerings and intensified competition from Chinese rivals. Additionally, Elon Musk has faced criticism for his political involvement, which has impacted sales. In an effort to boost sales, Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its base model.
Despite BYD's rapid expansion in recent years, its sales showed a slight slowdown in 2025 amid increasing competition in the Chinese market. However, the company maintains a strong position globally, offering competitive prices compared to other manufacturers, especially in markets across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Furthermore, the United Kingdom has recently become its largest market outside China, with sales having surged by 880% in the past 12 months.
