An Apparently Insignificant Plant Performs Wonders in Criminal Investigations

Even the tiniest fragment of moss can reveal the secret location of a crime scene. Although moss may seem unimportant, it can carry a hidden forensic fingerprint. Due to the fact that different species of moss thrive in very specific micro-environments, their fragments can indicate exactly where a person has been. A recent study highlighted how moss has helped solve crimes in multiple countries, including one case where it led investigators directly to the remains of a buried child.

"We wanted to emphasize the importance of botanical evidence, as there is a high likelihood that investigators may overlook it due to a lack of knowledge," says Matt von Konrat, head of the Botanical Collections at the Field Museum in Chicago. Mosses are simple plants that grow in moist, shaded environments and can provide essential evidence in criminal investigations.

The study was conducted over a period of 150 years, with the analysis inspired by previous cases involving moss. Among these was an incident in 2011 when a father was arrested for the murder of his daughter, and plant fragments helped locate the site where she had been buried. Researchers hope this work will encourage a wider use of moss in criminal investigations, thereby contributing to providing justice for families affected by violence.
