End of a Turbulent Tenure

Chelsea has severed ties with Enzo Maresca, marking a dramatic fall for the Italian who was named Manager of the Month in November. The club has only won one of its last seven league matches, severely impacting their Premier League title aspirations. "Chelsea Football Club and manager Enzo Maresca have parted ways," the club stated in an official announcement on Thursday.

Unexpected Departure

Maresca joined Chelsea in 2024 after leading Leicester City to promotion to the Premier League. He leaves the club 18 months into his tenure, having been hired to revitalize the team following two years without Champions League qualification. Nonetheless, he managed to secure a spot in the Champions League, finishing fourth, and also won the UEFA Conference League trophy and the Club World Cup in his first season with a young yet expensive squad.

Poor Form and the Club’s Decision

However, a series of poor results in December and an unusual outburst from the Italian prompted the club's management to take action. "With significant objectives still to be achieved in four competitions, including qualification for the Champions League, Enzo and the club believe that a change provides the team with the best chance to regain its momentum this season," Chelsea added.

Crisis of Confidence

Chelsea stood third in November and was considered a title contender, riding high after a 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League. Yet, the team has now dropped to fifth place, trailing leaders Arsenal by 15 points at mid-season. Maresca expressed frustrations regarding a lack of support from the club, describing a period following a 2-0 win over Everton as the "worst 48 hours" of his tenure.

Final Match and Team's Future

His final match was a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth, where fans chanted, "You don't know what you're doing," as Maresca substituted playmaker Cole Palmer. The club has not yet announced who will take charge ahead of Sunday’s match against second-placed Manchester City.
