Devastating Fire Claims Lives at Swiss Ski Resort
Tragedy Strikes in Crans-Montana
A devastating fire has claimed the lives of "dozens" of individuals and injured over 100 others at a bar in a ski resort while partygoers celebrated the arrival of the New Year in the early hours of Thursday, Swiss authorities reported.
The fire broke out at 1:30 a.m. (00:30 GMT) at Le Constellation, a bar located in the center of the luxurious town of Crans-Montana in southwestern Switzerland. "There was an explosion of unknown origin," stated Gaetan Lathion, spokesperson for the police in the Valais canton.
Over 100 people were inside the bar at the time. Frederic Gisler, commander of the Valais police, reported that "multiple dozens" of individuals are presumed dead, though no exact number has been disclosed. The Italian Foreign Ministry indicated that approximately 40 individuals may have perished, according to Swiss police. Medical sources reported that hospitals in the French-speaking region of Switzerland are overwhelmed with victims suffering from severe burns.
Authorities responded swiftly, dispatching 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances, and 150 responders to the scene. Most of the injured were transported to the hospital in Valais, where the intensive care unit is at capacity.
Officials have closed off the area surrounding the bar to the public and instituted a no-fly zone over Crans-Montana. Currently, "we are still at the beginning of the investigation," added Lathion, emphasizing that it is an internationally renowned tourist destination.
Beatrice Pilloud, the Attorney General of the Valais canton, noted that the hypothesis of an accidental fire is currently favored, and an attack is not being considered. A reception center and an emergency hotline have been established to support the affected families.
