Mass Demolitions in Nur Shams Refugee Camp

Israeli forces have commenced the demolition of dozens of buildings housing Palestinian families in the occupied West Bank, triggering mass displacement as winter approaches and leaving communities in search of shelter. Excavators and cranes deployed by the Israeli military have destroyed residential blocks in the Nur Shams refugee camp, displacing approximately 100 families. Clouds of dust rose over the camp as residents looked on from a distance.

Devastating Impact on the Community

“Being uprooted from our homes, our neighborhoods, and our memories is deeply painful,” stated Mutaz Mahr, whose building was destroyed. “The occupation tries by all means to exhaust and pressure us,” he added. Mahr and about 25 of his relatives are now sheltered in a 100-square-meter apartment after being forced to leave the camp.

International Community's Response

The demolitions have been justified by the Israeli army as part of an operation against Palestinian resistance groups, a claim that has not been independently verified. Palestinian residents and human rights groups argue that the destruction constitutes collective punishment and forced displacement under occupation. According to a member of the popular committee in Nur Shams, the scale of displacements has already reached crisis levels, with over 1,500 families unable to return to their homes.

Illegal Settlement Expansion

As the homes of the refugees turn to rubble, Israel continues its illegal settlement expansion. Recently, Israeli authorities approved plans for 126 housing units for settlers in the Sa-Nur outpost in northern West Bank, according to Israeli media. This decision comes in the wake of the Israeli parliament repealing the disengagement law, thereby allowing settlers to return to areas previously evacuated.

Pressures on the UN Refugee Agency

This series of demolitions and settlement approvals coincides with increasing pressure on the UN refugee agency, UNRWA. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Israel's actions to cut electricity and water supplies to UNRWA facilities, endangering its operational capacity. Critics argue that the simultaneous attack on UNRWA and communities in the West Bank suggests a broader effort to dismantle the Palestinian refugee issue.
