Sudan Loses to Burkina Faso

Sudan was forced to confront the 2022 champions, Senegal, in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso in their final group match. On the other hand, Algeria successfully overcame Equatorial Guinea with a score of 3-1.

In the first fifteen minutes of the match at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Lassina Traore scored the opening goal for Burkina Faso. Sudan had the opportunity to equalize but Algozoli Nooh missed a penalty, sending the ball wide of the goal. Jacques Kouassi sealed Burkina Faso's victory in the 85th minute, advancing the team to the knockout stages. Both teams had already qualified for the elimination round from Group E, with Algeria leading the group.

Sudan achieved a 1-0 victory against Equatorial Guinea, allowing them to progress as one of the best third-placed teams despite suffering their second defeat in three matches. With a global ranking of 117, Sudan has only won two matches in 19 Africa Cup appearances, having last secured the trophy in 1970.

Algeria finished the group stage with a perfect record, defeating Equatorial Guinea without difficulty. Coach Vladimir Petkovic made nine changes to the starting eleven, yet his team managed to impress once again, scoring three goals in the opening 14 minutes of the match. Zineddine Belaid opened the scoring in the 19th minute, followed by goals from Fares Chaibi and Ibrahim Maza. Emil Nsue managed to score for Equatorial Guinea, but it was too late to change the outcome of the match.
