Major Changes to Taxes and Healthcare in the U.S. Starting January 1, 2026
This is the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act"
At the beginning of 2026, citizens in the United States are preparing to feel significant changes in the tax code, healthcare system, and government benefits due to the implementation of measures from the legislative package promoted by President Donald Trump. The law, known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (OBBBA), was signed into law in July despite bipartisan opposition.
Healthcare Insurance Costs Will Increase
Health insurance prices will rise for citizens who obtain coverage through the marketplace established by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). OBBBA has not extended ACA subsidies, which will expire on December 31. Experts estimate that the dramatic increase in premiums will affect over 20 million individuals.
End of Health Subsidies
Congress has entered a legislative impasse regarding the extension of ACA subsidies, which could lead to significant loss of insurance for 2.2 million Americans due to rising costs.
New SNAP Law
According to OBBBA, there are new work requirements to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Able-bodied individuals aged 18 to 64 must work at least 80 hours per month to remain eligible for benefits.
Changes to Inheritance Taxes
The law introduces an expanded exemption for inheritance tax, allowing individuals who receive an inheritance of less than $15 million to be exempt from taxes.
Childcare Benefits
Additionally, OBBBA will increase the tax credit for childcare, providing up to 50% of eligible expenses, with a raised cap of $3,000 for one child and $6,000 for two or more children.
