Major Operation in the Gulf of Finland

The Finnish police have detained a ship suspected of damaging an undersea telecommunications cable linking Helsinki and Estonia. The cargo vessel, named Fitburg, was sailing from St. Petersburg to the port of Haifa in Israel, under the flag of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

All 14 crew members were arrested following the incident involving the cable, which is owned by the Finnish telecommunications operator Elisa. The company stated that the damage has not affected the functionality of its services, which have been redirected.

Authorities are investigating charges related to "aggravated destruction of telecommunications" and "aggravated sabotage and attempt of aggravated sabotage." The detained crew members are from Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

Undersea cables transport essential electricity and data between countries, maintaining internet connectivity. The Baltic Gulf has previously witnessed similar incidents where undersea cables have been damaged or completely severed.

Additionally, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated that Finland is prepared for various security challenges and will respond accordingly. The incident has raised questions about possible international implications, though the police have stated they will not speculate on these matters.

This week, the Estonian government reported a second damage incident involving a telecommunications cable connecting Estonia and Finland. Estonian President Alar Karis expressed hope that it was not a deliberate act and that the investigation would clarify the situation.
