Eurostar Delays Enter Second Day as Passengers Stranded Overnight
Eurostar Delays Caused by Power Outage
Eurostar passengers are bracing for further disruptions after a power outage in the Channel Tunnel caused chaos for thousands. On Tuesday evening, as many were trying to reach New Year's celebrations, some travelers reported being stuck on board trains for over six hours.
A man stated that he boarded the 19:01 train to Paris, but by 03:00 GMT he was still blocked at the tunnel entrance. "The chances are 50% we will reach Paris, 50% we will return to London," he said. Eurostar announced plans to resume all services on Wednesday but warned that delays and cancellations might still occur.
The power supply issue, along with a faulty LeShuttle train, blocked all routes on Tuesday, causing disruptions for thousands of travelers. Some Eurostar and LeShuttle services resumed Tuesday evening, but delays continued, as only one of the two tracks in the tunnel was open. Getlink, which operates the Channel Tunnel, stated that repair work is ongoing through the night.
According to Eurostar's website, services resumed on Wednesday morning after the power issues, but there is still a risk of last-minute delays or cancellations. Another passenger from the Netherlands reported spending six hours stuck on a train, without access to electricity and unable to get food.
Images of massive crowds of stranded travelers at St Pancras International station in London flooded social media following the outage. Eurostar has urged travelers to reschedule their journeys for another day, with the possibility of free exchanges.
