Bulgaria to Adopt Euro in 2026
Bulgaria to Bid Farewell to the Lev
Starting January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will phase out its national currency, the lev, and become the 21st country in Europe to adopt the euro. This decision marks a significant milestone in Bulgaria's integration into the European Union (EU), of which it has been a member since January 1, 2007. Additionally, Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in March 2024.
Currently, among the 27 member states of the European Union, only six countries continue to use their national currencies: the Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Sweden.
The euro serves as the official currency of the European Union, facilitating trade and travel among member states. Approximately 350 million people use the euro, making it the most popular official currency in the world.
The European Union is a political and economic bloc consisting of 27 states, aimed at promoting cooperation and free trade. Member states are required to adopt the euro once they meet specific economic criteria.
