Anthony Joshua Injured in Tragic Car Accident
British boxer Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident in Nigeria, which resulted in the deaths of two members of his team. The former world champion was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on a major highway in Ogun State, near Lagos.
The deceased individuals were close friends and members of Joshua's team, Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele, according to the pugilist's promoter, Matchroom Boxing. It was reported that Joshua is in stable condition at the hospital, where he was taken for "investigations and treatment" and will remain under observation.
“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected - and we ask for their privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” Matchroom stated in their communication.
Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn paid tribute to the “two wonderful men” who lost their lives. “Rest in eternal peace, Sina and Latz. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone,” he said.
Boxing expert Steve Bunce described Ghami and Ayodele as “two of the closest people to Joshua” and an essential part of the “Anthony Joshua machine.”
The accident occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan highway around noon, with the Nigerian Road Safety Federation reporting that the Lexus in which Joshua and his team were traveling was “suspected to be speeding.” Initial investigations indicated that the vehicle lost control while attempting to overtake and collided with the stationary truck.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated he personally spoke with Joshua to convey his condolences and wishes for a “full and speedy recovery.” Joshua, who has family roots in Sagamu, Nigeria, recently garnered attention for his victories and was expected by family to celebrate the New Year.
Tributes continue to pour in following the deaths of the two team members, with Joshua's family confirming that the news came as a "shock" to them. A swift recovery is hoped for the British pugilist.
