Jair Bolsonaro Undergoes Second Medical Procedure for Hiccups
Recent Medical Procedure for Former Brazilian President
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, currently incarcerated, has undergone a second medical procedure in just three days to address persistent hiccups. Doctors performed a "phrenic nerve block" to halt the activity of the left phrenic nerve, following treatment of the right nerve on Saturday.
The phrenic nerve, located in the neck, is crucial for diaphragm control, which is essential for breathing. Bolsonaro, a far-right leader, is serving a 27-year sentence after conspiring to overturn the 2022 elections. This recent treatment follows surgery for a double hernia, confirmed by his wife, Michelle.
Dr. Claudio Birolini stated that Bolsonaro's condition is "stable" after the second procedure for hiccups, and he does not believe that hospitalization will be prolonged. The medical team expects Bolsonaro to be discharged on January 1, should recovery proceed smoothly.
At 70 years old, Bolsonaro received his first treatment for recurrent hiccups on Saturday, with medical professionals noting that it "went well." The former president also underwent intestinal surgery in April.
Following his electoral defeat in 2022 to Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro has been supporting his son Flávio's candidacy for the 2026 presidential elections.
