Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Receives Five-Year Prison Sentence

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges, including attempts to obstruct his arrest following a failed attempt to impose martial law in December 2024. Yoon was sentenced on Friday during a televised hearing at the Seoul District Court, marking one of the most sensitive political trials in the country’s recent history.

Yoon's lawyers have stated that he plans to appeal the court's decision. However, this is just the first conviction in a series of trials facing the former leader, who was ousted and detained following widespread protests against his government that began in late 2024.

Moreover, Yoon could face a death penalty if convicted on charges of insurrection. He is the first incumbent president in South Korea's history to be arrested and prosecuted. His short administration has been characterized by criticism and low approval ratings.

In his ruling, Judge Baek Dee-hyun emphasized that martial law can only be declared under exceptional circumstances and that the president must consult the cabinet before making such a declaration. Yoon mobilized security forces to prevent his arrest, which was ordered by the Corruption Investigation Office on January 3, 2025.

Now, attention turns to future trials, with Yoon's fate hanging in the balance.
