Yoweri Museveni Leads in Uganda's Presidential Elections

Preliminary Results Show Incumbent President's Significant Lead

Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has taken a strong lead in the preliminary results of Thursday’s presidential elections, according to the electoral agency. Results announced on Friday morning place Museveni ahead with 76% of the votes, based on data collected from 45% of polling stations nationwide. He is followed by opposition leader Bobi Wine, who has garnered approximately 20%. Ugandans voted in a tense atmosphere, following a campaign that was often marked by violence, as the 81-year-old Museveni seeks a seventh term in office.
