Emergency Meeting on Iran

The UN Security Council is set to meet on Thursday at 3:00 PM in New York to discuss the situation in Iran, where hundreds have reportedly been killed in recent protests against the government.

UN Assistant Secretary-General Martha Pobee is expected to brief the ambassadors, alongside two voices from civil society. Nationwide demonstrations in Iran began in late December, triggered by record inflation, soaring food prices, and a sudden collapse of the national currency.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed shock at reports of violence and the excessive use of force by authorities, emphasizing the need for maximum restraint. “All Iranians must be able to express their grievances peacefully and without fear. The rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, as enshrined in international law, must be fully respected and protected,” stated a spokesperson.

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk called for investigations into all killings, violence against protesters, and other violations, underscoring that those responsible must be held accountable. “It is also extremely concerning to see public statements from judicial officials indicating the possibility of using the death penalty against protesters through expedited judicial processes,” he added.

Regarding recent sanctions, the Security Council meeting was called by the United States, which announced that it is taking measures against the architects of the Iranian regime's brutal repression of peaceful demonstrators. Washington is imposing sanctions on five senior Iranian officials, including the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani.
