Federal Officer Shoots Venezuelan Immigrant in Minneapolis Incident
Incident Sparks Protests in Minneapolis
A federal officer in the United States shot a Venezuelan man in the leg in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Officials stated that the officers were attempting to stop a vehicle to arrest the man but opened fire after two individuals attacked one of them with a snow shovel and a broomstick.
Protests erupted in the city following this incident. The shooting occurred just a week after an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a local resident, during an immigration raid.
In a post on the social media platform X, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) noted that at 6:50 PM local time (00:50 GMT), officers were attempting to apprehend "an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who was released into the country by former President Joe Biden in 2022.
The man attempted to flee, crashing his vehicle into another parked car and then running on foot. One of the officers apprehended him, and during the struggle, two individuals intervened and began to strike the officer. In response to the ambush, the officer fired, injuring the immigrant in the leg.
Both the immigrant and the assaulted officer were transported to the hospital, and the two assailants were arrested.
