Maria Corina Machado to Meet Donald Trump at the White House

Maria Corina Machado, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, has announced her willingness to share the Nobel Peace Prize with Donald Trump. The meeting between the two is scheduled for Thursday at the White House, following Machado's public offer. Trump remarked that it would be an "honor" to accept the prize, although the Nobel Institute in Norway clarified that, legally, it is not possible to transfer the award.

This development comes amid Trump's criticisms of the Nobel committee for bypassing him and granting the award to Machado, acknowledging her long-standing fight for democracy in Venezuela. Although Machado won the opposition primaries in 2023 by a considerable margin, she was excluded from the presidential elections, which many international organizations deemed illegitimate.

Following a U.S. operation that led to the ousting of Nicolás Maduro, Trump began to support Maduro's vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, asserting that Machado is not "respected" enough to lead the country. Machado hopes to leverage her time with Trump to persuade him that the choice of Rodríguez is a mistake and that her opposition coalition should lead the transition.

Trump has described an "excellent" conversation with Rodríguez and praised her; however, Machado remains a polarizing figure in Venezuelan politics. Her supporters admire her ability to unite a fragmented opposition, while regime supporters see her as a formidable and vocal adversary.

The divisions among Venezuelans regarding Trump's role and who should lead the country run deep. While many recognize Machado's expertise, some believe that choosing Rodríguez could help avoid instability in an already fragile nation.
