Trump Administration Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for 75 Countries
Trump Administration Announces Suspension of Immigrant Visa Processing
The Trump administration has announced an indefinite suspension of immigrant visa processing for 75 countries, thereby limiting legal avenues for entry into the United States. The State Department stated that the administration aims to end "abuse" of the system by individuals attempting to extract welfare from the American populace through social benefits.
President Donald Trump has sought to restrict both illegal and legal immigration to the United States, and his administration has already halted immigrant visa processing for individuals from Brazil, Iran, Russia, and Somalia. The order will take effect on January 21, although the complete list of the 75 countries has not yet been released.
Tommy Pigott, Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, stated: "The State Department will use its longstanding authority to deem potential immigrants ineligible if they would become a public charge to the United States and take advantage of the generosity of the American people." Visa processing will be suspended while the department reassesses procedures to prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would utilize social aid.
Furthermore, the State Department has instructed consular officers to halt visa applications from the affected countries. The suspension will not apply to temporary visas for tourists or business travelers.
In recent months, the State Department has increased restrictions on migration from countries that Trump has deemed a national security threat, including Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, and several African nations. Following an incident in November where an immigrant from Afghanistan was accused of shooting two members of the National Guard in Washington, DC, the administration has banned or restricted the entry of nationals from 19 countries.
In December, the travel ban was expanded to include individuals from five additional countries, as well as those traveling on documents issued by the Palestinian Authority. Additionally, asylum cases, citizenship processing, and green card applications for immigrants from the initial 19 banned countries have been suspended.
