Trump Announces Progress in Ukraine Talks Despite Delicate Issues
Progress in Negotiations for Ukraine
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky reported significant advancements toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine during their discussions in Florida. However, the American leader emphasized that "one or two very delicate issues" still remain unresolved. While both presidents characterized the meeting as "great," Trump pointed out that a controversial point involves territorial matters, with Russia previously demanding additional land concessions from Ukraine.
During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Zelensky revealed that they have reached an agreement on "90%" of a 20-point peace plan, while Trump stated that security guarantees for Ukraine are "almost complete, 95%." Zelensky also added that teams from the U.S. and Ukraine will convene next week for further discussions aimed at concluding the nearly four-year-long war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine.
Russia initiated a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and currently controls approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory. Trump noted that the proposal to transform the Donbas region, largely controlled by Russia, into a demilitarized zone remains "unresolved." "Part of this territory has been taken," he told journalists following the meeting.
