At least 13 people were killed overnight in one of the deadliest Israeli military operations in southern Syria in recent months. The incident took place in the village of Beit Jinn, near the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Syrian state media reported on Friday. Among the victims were several children, according to local health officials. The attack involved a complex combination of ground combat and air strikes, marking a significant escalation in Israel’s cross-border operations.

How the Raid Unfolded

Syria’s official SANA news agency said that the Israeli raid began shortly after midnight, when IDF troops crossed into the outskirts of Beit Jinn with the stated purpose of arresting militants. Local residents reportedly confronted the troops, prompting an exchange of gunfire. As the clashes intensified, Israeli aircraft carried out two targeted strikes — one hitting a group of people outdoors and the second destroying a building believed to house militants.

Bodycam videos released by the Israel Defense Forces show soldiers advancing through the narrow village streets at night, firing in the dark as automatic gunfire echoes from multiple directions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based monitoring group, confirmed that at least one residential structure collapsed during the operation. According to the group, some of the fatalities may have been caused by falling debris rather than direct fire.

IDF: Operation Targeted Jamaa Islamiya Militant Cell

In a statement on Friday morning, the IDF described the raid as a “precision security operation” aimed at detaining members of Jamaa Islamiya, a militant group accused of planning attacks against Israeli civilians.

“When our forces entered the village, several terrorists opened fire. The soldiers responded immediately,” the IDF said. “All suspects were apprehended, and a number of terrorists were eliminated.”

Six Israeli soldiers were injured in the firefight — three of them seriously. The IDF did not provide details about their condition.

SANA reported that three villagers were arrested and taken toward the occupied Golan.

Civilian Casualties and Hospital Chaos

The director of the local hospital told SANA that his facility had received multiple bodies, including five members of the same family. The hospital corridors were crowded with wounded people, many suffering from shrapnel wounds, burns, and crush injuries caused by the collapse of a building.

Syria’s foreign ministry issued a strongly worded statement accusing Israel of committing a “fully-fledged war crime” and urged the UN Security Council to intervene. “More than 10 civilians, including women and children, were brutally killed,” the statement read.

Israel’s Expanding Role Inside Syria

Since the collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime nearly a year ago, Israel has increased its military presence across the former demilitarized buffer zone along the Golan Heights. For decades, this zone functioned as a stabilizing barrier following the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

The United Nations has repeatedly criticized Israel for entering the buffer zone, calling IDF deployments a “clear violation” of the disengagement agreement. Israel argues it is acting to prevent Iranian-backed militias and other anti-Israel armed groups from establishing footholds in southern Syria.

Israeli officials say they cannot allow the Syrian army, which they view as a strategic threat, to redeploy in the area.

US Mediation Stalled

For several months, Washington has attempted to broker a security arrangement between Israel and Syria to prevent further escalations. Negotiations have been unsuccessful due to multiple sticking points:

  • Israel’s insistence that Syrian government forces remain entirely outside the buffer zone

  • Syria’s demand that Israel halt all cross-border raids

  • the presence of Iranian-linked groups operating in the region

  • Syria’s internal instability following Assad’s fall

This latest raid may further complicate the already fragile talks.

Regional Impact

Humanitarian organizations warn that the escalation could trigger a new wave of displacement. Southern Syria is already suffering from severe shortages of food, medical care, and administrative governance as the region struggles to rebuild after years of conflict and political collapse.

The incident marks a dramatic escalation in Israel’s operations and serves as a reminder of the volatility of the region — a region where a single raid can reignite wider conflict.
