Women’s 100m Final to Open the LA 2028 Olympics
Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic Games, marking the city’s third time as host — and this edition will start in spectacular fashion. According to World Athletics president Lord Coe, the women’s 100m final will take place on day one, followed by the men’s final on day two, ensuring maximum global excitement from the very beginning.
The Games will run from July 14 to July 30, 2028. Athletics will span the entire event, while swimming will move to the second week, a historic first.
The LA28 Games will feature 36 sports and 51 disciplines, spread across 49 competition venues in 18 zones across the Los Angeles area and Oklahoma City. A highlight will be “Super Saturday” on July 29, featuring 26 finals in 23 sports.
British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith expressed her excitement, saying it’s “an honour” for women’s sprinting to open the Olympics, exactly 100 years after women first competed in Olympic track and field.
Although the new format means sprinters will run all three rounds in a single day, LA28 athlete chief Janet Evans said athletes were broadly supportive of the change.
Athletics will take place at the LA Memorial Coliseum, while swimming will be held at SoFi Stadium, which also hosts the opening ceremony. The first medal of the Games will come from the women’s triathlon, while the final medal will be awarded in swimming.
For the first time, the LA28 Games will feature gender balance, with 50.5% of all athletes being women and every team sport having equal or greater representation for women than for men.
Details of the Olympic football tournament and the Los Angeles Paralympic Games (August 15–27) are expected to be released later.
