Elon Musk Calls Acting NASA Chief “Sean Dummy” as SpaceX Contract Faces Scrutiny
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, launched a wave of online insults at Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who is currently serving as acting head of NASA, after Duffy hinted that SpaceX’s lunar contract might be reconsidered.
Posting on X Tuesday morning, Musk called Duffy “Sean Dummy,” mocked his intelligence, and shared memes targeting him.
“Should someone whose biggest claim to fame is climbing trees be running America’s space program?” Musk wrote, referring to Duffy’s past as a world champion lumberjack.
Earlier, Duffy told CNBC that SpaceX — which holds a $2.9 billion NASA contract for the Artemis III lunar lander— is behind schedule, which could delay the U.S. goal of returning humans to the Moon before China.
Duffy suggested he may reopen the contract for competition among other private aerospace firms.
In response, Musk defended SpaceX, calling it “the only U.S. company to human-certify a new orbital spacecraft”and accused Duffy of trying to “kill NASA.”
Reports later revealed that Jared Isaacman, a close ally of Musk who has flown twice aboard SpaceX missions, could again be under consideration to lead NASA. Isaacman told CNN he has “never assumed” he would be renominated but expressed respect for Duffy and admiration for NASA’s mission.
A spokesperson for Duffy clarified that the secretary has no interest in taking over NASA permanently, though he believes the agency might benefit from being part of the Cabinet, potentially within the Department of Transportation.
