Trump asks Supreme Court to overturn E Jean Carroll verdict
President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to review a $5 million civil verdict in favor of writer E Jean Carroll, who accused him of defamation and sexual assault.
Trump claims that Judge Lewis Kaplan improperly allowed evidence that affected the jury’s view of him. A federal appeals court rejected this challenge last year, upholding the jury’s decision.
Carroll won damages after Trump denied her allegations and called the incident a hoax. In a separate case, a jury ordered Trump to pay $83 million for defamation, a ruling later upheld on appeal.
Trump’s lawyers argued that the jury should not have seen the 2005 Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump discussed inappropriate behavior toward women. Carroll, now 81, accused Trump of sexual assault in the 1990s in a Manhattan department store dressing room. The jury rejected her rape claim but awarded damages for defamation.
